About Me
My name is Ritwik Gupta and I am an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, with a joint appointment in the AI Interdisciplinary Institute (starting July 2026). I am finishing up my Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, where I am a member of the Berkeley AI Research (BAIR) and the Berkeley Risk and Security Lab (BRSL) labs. My research focus is on computer vision for chaotic environments, as well as the governance of dual-use AI in both civil and defense contexts. I am co-advised by Drs. Trevor Darrell and Shankar Sastry. I am an AI Policy Fellow in the Center for Security in Politics under the advisement of Sec. Janet Napolitano.
I conduct open-source investigations as a Research Fellow at Berkeley’s Human Rights Center.
Outside of Berkeley, I serve as the Technical Director for Autonomy for the Defense Innovation Unit and as the Advisor on AI and AI Policy to the U.S. Department of Justice.
